A misleading article about snails on the news!!!

2023-11-13

Many breeders contacted me today about the article: on News
The original article listed as the source is here.
This article is unfortunately very unfortunate and misleading. Yes, transmission of helminths from snails to humans is possible, but only snails imported directly from the wild can have helminths. Captive bred snails, which is the majority, are clean and do not contain any parasites. Furthermore, if you did purchase a snail imported from the wild and you happen to have an infected snail, you can only become infected by, for example, licking the snail directly or eating it without cooking it.
In my 15 or so years of breeding African snails, working with imported snails frequently, I am still here and have never had a health problem. I´ve never even heard of a case of snail to human transmission, not even the original article that the News drew from mentions that.
By the way, these nematodes have been known about for many years and only now Swiss scientists have written an article about them as a great discovery and a huge danger:-) Moreover, they focus only on the species Lissachatina fulica, which is the most common and people often breed these snails, but that perhaps the populations of native snails in our country or in other countries could also be infected and therefore a child who licks a garden snail could be infected, so they prefer not to talk about that either. Everything is built to spread panic and create artificial risk where there is none.
So if you have a breeding snail (if you bought a baby snail, it´s always a breeding snail), you have nothing to worry about. If you have a snail imported from the wild, don´t lick it and always wash your hands after handling.

Newly for sale The zebra-tailed lizard (Callisaurus draconoides)

2023-11-03

The zebra-tailed lizard (Callisaurus draconoides) is a small iguana with a striped tail. It is an undemanding lizard that feeds on insects. It is a desert animal. They therefore need a strong UVB source in their terrarium and ideally a larger layer of sand as a substrate, which they like to bury themselves in. Juveniles of Callisaurus draconoides are available.
