They say to the third of all good and bad. Ing. Jiří Patokas third publication in a series published by Robimaus holds the standard of previous books devoted to freshwater shrimps, crabs and hermit crabs. And definitely in a good way. In three shorter books, a single author has created a monographic treatment of higher crustaceans from the point of view of aquarium breeding, which has never been done before in the Czech language to such an extent. The book on crayfish is the second book by the above-mentioned author devoted to these crustaceans. The first one was published in 2008 and was very positively received by the breeding public. Apart from summarizing practical information on keeping crayfish in aquariums, this book provides basic information on morphology, ethology and ecology, gives an overview of the most commonly kept representatives, mentions species from the wild in the Czech Republic and includes a summary of information on crayfish diseases. Although the handbook is intended primarily for breeders, this does not in any way degrade its professional impact. It can definitely be recommended as supplementary literature for university students of aquaristics, invertebrate zoology, hydrobiology, aquatic animal ecology and related fields and in general for all those interested in nature. Ing. Jiří Patoka, Dis., was born in 1978 in Rakovník. After passing the matriculation exam at the science branch of the gymnasium, he entered the Higher Vocational School of Water Management and Ecology in Vodnany, where he graduated. He is currently working and studying as a PhD student at the Department of Zoology and Fisheries at the Czech University of Agriculture in Prague, focusing on the ethology and sociality of crayfish. He has gained experience in animal husbandry while working in pet shops, in the wholesale pet trade and at the T. G. Masaryk Water Research Institute. Among his favourite animals are freshwater crustaceans, especially crayfish, crabs and shrimps, and he has successfully bred and reared many species. To date, he has three books and one certified methodology on crustacean farming. His articles in breeding and scientific magazines and lectures at aquarium clubs and for students at the aforementioned Czech University of Life Sciences also contribute to the popularization of these animals.
